Portugal has grown on me in many unexpected ways. My first encounter with this charming country was purely serendipitous—a spontaneous stop during a Spanish trip with a friend. Compared to New York, the cost of living here is roughly one-third of that in New York, making it an attractive destination for those who seek quality experiences without breaking the bank. The local people are notably warm and welcoming, which adds to the country’s charm. However, while Lisbon is relatively English-friendly, other areas can pose a communication challenge. Many locals outside the capital are less fluent in English, and even at gas stations and supermarkets, English signage is often minimal. This limited English usage is largely due to the country’s strong cultural identity, as Portuguese is the primary language in daily life, and businesses mainly cater to local customers.
