Coverage Details:

1. Trip Cancellation:

  • Reimburses non-refundable airfare, hotel, or cruise expenses.
  • If a physician advises against travel, the traveler must notify the travel provider immediately.

2. Trip Interruption:

  • Covers non-refundable flight and accommodation costs.
  • Provides additional transportation expenses (up to economy-class airfare).
  • If departure is delayed, covers the cost difference for a rescheduled ticket.

Coverage Limits:

2Baggage Insurance

When you pay the entire fare for a trip using your eligible American Express card, you're automatically covered for lost, damaged, or stolen baggage.

Who is covered:
  • Card Member
  • Spouse or Domestic Partner
  • Dependent children under 23 (or older if handicapped and dependent)
Coverage Limits (per trip):
  • Carry-on baggage: Up to $1,250
  • Checked baggage: Up to $500
  • High-risk items (e.g., electronics, jewelry): Up to $250 total
  • NY Residents: Up to $10,000 aggregate per trip
Covered scenarios:
  • During direct transit to/from the carrier terminal

3Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance

When you reserve and pay for a rental car using your eligible American Express card and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW), you may be covered for damage to or theft of the rental vehicle.

Who is covered:
  • Card Member (Eligible Renter)
  • Spouse or Domestic Partner
  • Authorized Drivers listed on the Rental Agreement
Coverage Details:
  • Covers up to $50,000 per rental for damage or theft
  • Valid for up to 30 consecutive days per rental
  • Covers loss of use, towing, storage, depreciation, and admin fees (when required by law)
  • Coverage is secondary to other insurance or reimbursements
  • Excludes rentals in Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and OFAC-sanctioned countries
What’s not covered:
  • Damage to tires (unless from fire or vandalism)

  • Loss, deterioration, and natural wear and tear are excluded.

5Extended Warranty

When you purchase eligible items using your American Express card, this benefit extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to 1 additional year.

Who is covered:
  • Card Member (the primary cardholder who made the purchase)
Coverage Details:
  • Applies to items with original warranties of 5 years or less
  • Coverage begins after the manufacturer’s warranty and/or service contract ends
  • Covers up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per card per calendar year
  • Only the portion of the item paid for with your Amex card is covered
What’s not covered:
  • Items like antiques, used goods, consumables (food, batteries), software, living plants/animals, land, or downloadable products
  • Items purchased for resale or professional/commercial use
  • Items not charged to the Amex card, or where the warranty exceeds 5 years
  • Damage not covered by the original warranty (e.g., due to natural disasters or power surges unless covered originally)

Just pay with your eligible Amex card. If you use Amex Membership Rewards or Pay with Points, those purchases still qualify.

6Cell Phone Protection

Overview

This insurance is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company (an AIG company) and applies to specific American Express card members. To be eligible for protection, you must pay your monthly cell phone bill using an enrolled American Express card.

Coverage Details

  • Coverage for stolen or damaged cell phones, including cracked screens, up to $800 per claim.
  • $50 deductible per claim applies.
  • A maximum of two (2) claims per 12-month period is allowed.
  • Reimbursement is based on the lesser of the repair cost or replacement value, up to the policy limit.

Eligibility Conditions

  • The monthly cell phone bill must be paid with an eligible American Express card to maintain coverage.
  • Claims must be reported within 90 days of the loss, and all required documentation must be submitted within 120 days.

Exclusions from Coverage

  • Accessories (except for standard battery and antenna).
  • Lost phones or Mysterious Disappearance (unexplained loss without evidence of theft).
  • Loss or damage while in transit (e.g., postal services, airlines, delivery companies).
  • Rented, leased, or prepaid phones.
  • Damage due to natural disasters (e.g., floods, earthquakes), war, illegal activities.
  • Damage covered under a manufacturer’s warranty.

7Return Protection

Overview

The Return Protection program offers an extended return policy for eligible items charged entirely on an eligible American Express card. If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days from the date of purchase and the merchant won’t accept it, American Express may refund the full purchase price, up to $300 per item, excluding shipping and handling charges, and up to a maximum of $1,000 per card member account per calendar year.

How to File a Return Protection Request

If the merchant refuses to accept the return, call 1-800-228-6855 within 90 days of the purchase date to notify us of your request.

Within 30 days from the initial call, submit the following documents:

  • A copy of the original store receipt
  • A copy of the American Express card record of charge
  • Any other items deemed necessary to process your request

Limitations and Exclusions

Purchases must be made in the United States and certain territories, and charged in full on an eligible card.

Refunds are limited to $300 per eligible item and $1,000 per card member account per calendar year.

Items must be in original purchase condition and working order.

Certain items are excluded from refunds (e.g., animals, plants, jewelry, services, used items, software, health care items, personal hygiene items, formal wear, tickets, motorized vehicles, land, buildings, firearms, cash equivalents, seasonal items).

  • Personal hygiene items (electrical or non-electrical toothbrushes, razors, medical or non-medical devices)

  • Tickets (transportation passes, event tickets)
  • Motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, airplanes), parts and accessories

Fraud Prevention If any request for benefits is determined to be fraudulent, all benefits will be forfeited. Concealing or misrepresenting any material fact with the intent to deceive will also result in forfeiture of benefits.
